One of the topics I'm very grateful that No Agenda covers is the Pedobear news. It is obviously a difficult topic, but I literally hear no other news source talking about this deplorable behaviour. I'm even more appalled now that I have two kids of my own. It's a type of human behaviour that just doesn't compute in my brain. So consider this your "heads up", this weeks NA Films Monday Movie will make your stomach churn. It was originally broadcast in October 2003 on the BBC 4 program Cutting Edge, so kudos to them for running this content in the first place.

Here is the description from Hardcash Productions website (the folks who made the documentary):

Liviu Tipurita returns to his homeland of Romania to investigate stories he has heard that there has been a sudden rise in the trafficking of children into the sex trade. He meets an old friend, fifteen-year-old street kid Laurentiu, who tells him he’s been selling sex to foreign pedophiles since he was twelve, and that a wealthy German has bought him a passport so that he can be trafficked to the West. Laurentiu introduces Liviu to his gang of street kids, some as young as eleven, being preyed on by the pedophiles.

Liviu follows up stories of kids trafficked to Italy, and on the streets of Milan films a fourteen year old boy being pimped by his own father. Over weeks of investigation, several more cases of families selling their own children for sex are documented.

Back in Romania, he hears about an English pedophile/trafficker called Tom. Co-producer/director Andrew Smith infiltrates Tom’s pimping network, and films damning evidence of how underage boys are preyed upon and trafficked to wealthy pedophile clients in the West.

Professional Revolutionaries (2012)

I usually try to pick feature length films for the NA Films Monday Movie, but this weeks is an exception. It's a 15 minute news piece that traces the protest tactics of the Arab Spring back to Serbia and a group called Optor!, as well as another group called CANVAS, Srdja Popovic, a American German freelance journalist, Gene Sharp and his book From Dictatorship to Democracy (PDF), the CIA and there are even some Hilary "Clippity Clop Lucifer" Clinton clips used it the piece.

Some of the reporting is a bit sketchy in the Alex Jones style of making assertions without using any documentation to back them up, but the overall picture this bit of news reporting paints illustrates several assertions that John and Adam have been making since Tunisia, Egypt and Syria started making headlines over a year ago. Mainly the shocking revelation (sarcasm) that people can be manipulated by outside forces.

Adam was also talking about a documentary coming out about former president Bill Clinton. I can't find anything on his IMDb page that sounds like a biographical film, but he is interviewed for a film called Fire in the Blood about how Western governments work with pharmaceutical to keep low cost AIDS medicine from African nations.

An Unreasonalble Man (2006)

This weeks film takes an in depth look at the career of Ralph Nadar. I've been listening to No Agenda since the beginning and I think I've heard him mentioned on the show, but not in any detail. As a film and as a political activist, Ralph Nadar fits the No Agenda mold - calling out douche bags and liars as he sees them. He definately has no love for the two major politcal parties here in Gitmo Nation (anyone remember the 2000 election?)

An Unreasonable Man is something of a standard documentary in form; talking head interviews inter cut with archival footage and/or photographs of the incidents discussed. But, since the filmmakers chose a very public and in some circles controversial figure, it remain engaging and fascinating all the way through.

Here is the synopsis from The Book of Knowledge:

"The first half of the film examines Nader's advocacy for auto safety features, such as federally mandated seat belts and air bags, as well as his rise to national prominence following an invasion of privacy lawsuit against General Motors. It also examines the formation of independent advocacy groups (termed "Nader's Raiders") during the 1970s; organizations which carried out independent research on various federal agencies, such as the Federal Trade Commission and the Food and Drug Administration. Over the next thirty years, the film argues, Nader "built a legislative record that would be the envy of any modern president."

The second half of the film traces Nader's shift to a grassroots form of organizing focused on citizen power, including his disillusionment with the two-party system following the rise of Reaganism. In assessing Nader's effect as a third party candidate, the film examines Nader's role as a spoiler in the 2000 presidential election.

The film presents interviews with current and former members of Nader's Raiders, including Joan Claybrook and Robert Fellmeth, as well as politicians and political analysts such as Phil Donahue, Pat Buchanan, and Eric Alterman. The film takes its name from the George Bernard Shaw quote, "The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man."

Being a film geek and a No Agenda Show listener, this weeks Monday Movie encompasses both of these worlds. Kirby Dick drew some controversy when he hired a private detective to investigate the Motion Picture Association of America (big, big supporters of SOPA and PIPA). In fact, Chris Dodd (former Senator from Connecticut) is the current head of the MPAA and is raking in over a million dollars a year as salary. Anyway, Dick was criticised for the use of the private detective because the members of the MPAA Ratings Board are notoriously secret and clearly push a conservative, straight and at times quite Christian agenda when rating films.

This documentary mainly deals with the was in which the MPAA directly censor motion pictures via the ratings system. From their web page: The film discusses disparities the filmmaker sees in ratings and feedback: between Hollywood and independent films, between homosexual and heterosexual sexual situations, between male and female sexual depictions, and between violence and sexual content.

Well, Adam and John go for like a dozen episodes without mentioning a film and them start rattling them off like crazy.

Adam mentioned the "Bin Laden film", which is titled "Untitled International Thriller" on IMDb right now. I can't find the trailers he was referring to as being "everywhere right now".

John is still raving about Hugo 3D, and I will join him in that praise. One of the best American films to come out in 2011.

Adam praised The American President after playing a clip of an Australian politician quotes the film verbatim.

This one is 5 hours long and contains...well just about everything Adam has ever talked about in the second half of the No Agenda Show, and then some. I couldn't find too much on who made this film or where it originated from, but this synopsis was posted on several sites that are hosting the film.

The Producer is an experienced, award winning documentary filmmaker who, as a child, learned that her father was a member of the secretive cult of Freemasonry. She recalls many arguments between her parents over her father's secret meetings and the exclusion of women from the brotherhood. The Masonic ring that her father wore had been passed down from father to son over the generations. When she asked her father about the meaning of the letter "G" and the compass and square on his ring, she got no response. As an adult, she decided to investigate. That investigation grew into four years of intensive research into the identity and history of the diabolical globalists who she calls the "Ring Of Power". This weeks Monday Movie might just test you patience, but, you will be rewarded if you make it all the way through. The full title of the film is The Money Masters - How International Bankers Gained Control of America. If that doesn't intrigue you then try this description:

A Face in the Crowd (1957)

This week we're going back to 1957. Back when everyone in Gitmo Nation was fully addicted to the relatively new invention called Television. A Face in the Crowd is second only to Network in my mind for most insightful fiction films about the power of the media (specifically television) to shape public opinion and steer all of us slaves in the direction the elites want us to go.

Here is the synopsis of just Act I of the story (from the Book of Knowledge):
"In late 1950s America, a drunken drifter, Larry Rhodes (Andy Griffith), is plucked out of a rural Arkansas jail by Marcia Jeffries (Patricia Neal) to sing on a radio show at station KGRK. His raw voice, folksy humor and personal charm bring about a strong local following, and he lands a television show in Memphis, Tennessee under the stage name "Lonesome" Rhodes, given to him on a whim by Jeffries. With the support of the show's staff writer Mel Miller (Walter Matthau) and Jeffries, the charismatic Rhodes ad libs his way to Memphis area popularity. When he pokes fun at his sponsor, a mattress company, they fire him — but his adoring audience revolts, burning mattresses in the street. A day late for the Monday Movie, so I'll make up for it with a drinking game to go along with this pick. It will help. Trust me.

I've played with these rules three times and since the film is 158 minutes long, I say drink one shot of beer for each of the following rules. If you drink anything stronger, No Agenda Films can not be held accountable for any drunk donating that happens.

One drink anytime...
1. Science confirms something.
2. A famous landmark and/or city is destroyed.
3. Someone physically runs from nature. (ex. "That earthquake is coming right for us!")
4. A pet is in jeopardy.
5. A sub-plot features a racial/cultural stereotype. (ex. the Indian scientists, the nerdy researcher, unemployed writer working part time job...)
6. Someone goes back to get someone.
7. There is a joke about an event that happens between 2009 and 2012.
8. Any character talks about counting down (to anything).
9. Woody Harrelson makes you think of Adam Curry.
10. Anyone slowly backs away from the camera in terrified awe.
11. Anyone watching the film with you says "What!?" out loud, that person has to finish their drink.

This is the last No Agenda Films Monday Movie before Christmas, so it's time for Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping's (their name at the time of filming) holiday classic What Would Jesus Buy?.

The Church of Life After Shopping (formerly known as the Church of Stop Shopping) is an activist performance group based in New York City, led by Reverend Billy, the stage name of Bill Talen. I've got an odd one for you this week. I have not formulated my opinion on Thrive (2011), but the url for the films website gives me pause. Then, I read the section called "The Problem/GLOBAL DOMINATION AGENDA" and I'm nodding my head in agreement. So for now, I would recommend watching it for free and only buy a copy from the above site once you figure out if there is any value in this for you.

The Most Dangerous Man in America (2009)

Daniel Ellsberg recently spoke at the OccupyCal protest at UC Berkeley campus. The former US military analyst was responsible for leaking the Pentagon Papers (eventually partially published by the New York Times in 1971) and turning the tide of public sentiment against the Vietnam War. At 80 years old he continues to be arrested for acts of civil disobedience (over 80 times and counting).

In 2009, Judith Ehrlich and Rick Goldsmith made a fantastic documentary, The Most Dangerous Man in America, about the publishing of the Pentagon Papers and Mr. Ellsberg's continues activism for a free and open democratic process within the US government. The fact that this film now exists in the era of the WikiLeaks story make the film all the more illuminating and insightful to the idea of putting classified documents out in the public view so that the people will know what their government is doing in their name.

Green Zone (2010)

November is Hollywood Propaganda Month here at No Agenda Films.

Director Paul Greengrass announced his intention to adapt Imperial Life in the Emerald City by Rajiv Chandrasekaran after Greengrass had completed The Bourne Ultimatum way back at the beginning of 2007. In 2010, Green Zone finally came out in theatres. Paul Greengrass is an interesting filmmaker for several reasons - he comes from a background as a journalist, he is very technically proficient within the film medium and he almost always makes film based on real events.

His films include; Resurrected (about the Falklands war), Open Fire (about a true police manhunt), The One That Got Away (about Gulf War I), Bloody Sunday (about the 1972 Northern Ireland shootings), United 93 (about the plane that went down in Shanksville, PA on 9/11) and now Green Zone. He also directed The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum.

Here are some thoughts from Mr. Greengrass on the making of Green Zone (found in the Book of Knowledge aka Wikipedia):

"Although Mr. Greengrass initially supported Tony Blair's justifications of the war, he became disillusioned over time. Greengrass carried out extensive research into the background to the conflict, reading left-wing journalists such as Bob Woodward, Seymour Hersh, James Risen, Thomas Ricks, and Ron Suskind, in addition to Rajiv Chandrasekaran, whose book he optioned. He has even compiled a document, How Did We Get It So Wrong?, detailing what he learned."

"Addressing some of the contentions in the film, Greengrass has said that the arguments about disbanding the Iraqi army portrayed in the film represent debates that actually took place by US policy makers. The issue of the culpability of the Fourth Estate, i.e. the mainstream (news) media, or MSM, in taking intelligence at face value, although embodied by a single character, represents a broad based failing in both the USA and UK, but for Greengrass the fault ultimately lay with those trying to manipulate them."

"Greengrass has said that both the Bourne films and Green Zone reflect a widespread popular mistrust of authority that was engendered by governments that have deliberately lied and have let their citizens down over the Iraq war. The confusion surrounding the absence of WMD in Iraq also provided an ideal scenario for a thriller, in which the protagonist battles for the truth."

Fair Game (2010)

November is Hollywood Propaganda Month here at No Agenda Films.

The second film for this month is a perfect double feature for last weeks film, Nothing but the Truth. That film was fictionalized account of the Judith Miller / Valerie Plame affair that happened in 2003. This weeks film, Fair Game (2010) is based on Valerie Plame's memoir and directed by Doug Liman (best know for starting the Bourne franchise by adapting The Bourne Identity). As is the case with any "based on a true story" film, there are bound to be discrepancies. The Book of Knowledge has some good details on a few of the potential inaccuracies in this film - here.

Keep in mind that the use of the word "propaganda" here is a two fold application. First, there is the literal definition of the word; "A concerted set of messages aimed at influencing the opinions or behavior of large numbers of people". Second, I contend that when Hollywood (or any film producing entity) puts out a "based on a true story", "inspired by true events" or any variation thereof there is a motive behind the film to put an official version of a story into the public consciousness since more people will see a film than any other media associated with the actual event.

Nothing but the Truth (2008)

November is Hollywood Propaganda Month here at No Agenda Films.

Our first pick comes from No Agenda producer John. Nothing but the Truth (2008) was made three years after the real life incident involving the journalist Judith Miller and the outing of Valerie Plame as a CIA agent by Robert Novak. This film was written and directed by Rod Lurie, whose previous film work speaks to his clear interests in the world of politics; Deterrence, The Contender and The Last Castle.

Here is the synopsis from The Book of Knowledge (aka Wikipedia):
Rachel Armstrong is an ambitious reporter for the Capital Sun-Times. When she discovers fellow soccer mom Erica Van Doren is working as a covert operative for the CIA and recently returned from Venezuela, where she was investigating an assassination attempt on the President of the United States, she confronts her and requests confirmation. Erica refuses to cooperate, but Rachel has no doubts about the veracity of the report, and her story becomes front-page news.

I'm using the term propaganda here since we're talking about a film that was made based on real events. These types of projects always come with extra baggage since the film version usually ends up being the main source for information about the real events under question. For example, how many people have seen the film JFK versus how many people have read one whole book about the same incident. It's easier to watch a film than read a book. However, in keeping with traditional Hollywood storytelling structure, there is far less complexity in any given Hollywood film than in most non-fiction books.

V for Vendetta (2006)

V for Vendetta isn't exactly an obscure film, but with the proliferation of Guy Fawkes masks popping up around the world at various "Occupy" protests, it seemed like a good time to go back and revisit this film. I was going to write up a bit more commentary, but I found a great quote from the director (see below) that I think will convince any regular No Agenda listener who hasn't seen the film to check it out.

"We felt the novel was very prescient to how the political climate is at the moment. It really showed what can happen when society is ruled by government, rather than the government being run as a voice of the people. I don't think it's such a big leap to say that things like that can happen when leaders stop listening to the people."

Idiocracy (2006)

This week we've got something a little lighter than usual. Depending on the age of the person you talk to, Mike Judge is either well know for Beavis and Butt-head or Office Space or King of the Hill. While the later two having made a sh*t load of money for 20th Century Fox, one would think that his feature film follow up to Office Space would have gotten a very public wide release all across Gitmo Nation. Nope. It was released in to 7 cities and barely over 100 screens. For comparison, when Office Space was released, it played on over 1,700 screens. Me thinks it may have had something to do with the plot of this comic gem.

The Weather Underground (2002)

And we're back after a week off due to a family emergency. All is good and this NA Films Monday Movie happens to fall on my birthday. I only mention this because ever since 2004, I watch this weeks film (my favorite documentary) on my birthday. The Weather Underground (2002) had a great run on the film festival circuit for almost two years before it was nominated for an Academy Award (Best Documentary Feature) in 2004.

If you are unfamiliar with the radical left college movements that took place here in Gitmo Nation East during the 1960's and 1970's, then you are in the same boat as me. I was born in 1977 and have no direct connection with anything going on in this documentary. That said, I watch this film with my jaw open every single time. These events happened in this country and in my own parents lifetime and these people lived to tell their tale.

What would happen today if there was a radical, underground network of mostly white, college age kids that went around the US of A blowing up government offices and buildings? It would not end the way this story ends.

The Legend of Ruby Ridge

John mentioned the Ruby Ridge "incident" on Sundays show (#334). This horrific event has come up on the show in the past and I had tried to post a NA Films Monday Movie selection, but all I had found was a terrible made for TV film from 1996 called The Siege at Ruby Ridge. Last night I found that someone had uploaded all five episodes of a show called The Secret Rulers of the World in which episode #1 is The Legend of Ruby Ridge. Overall, it is a good primer on the whole topic. Be warned that the narration is condescending to the point of rolling your eyes, but, Randy Weaver and his daughter Rachel Weaver are both interviewed separately and tell a very coherent and tragic tale of a police state run amok. Rachel even takes the crew back up to Ruby Ridge and give them/us a tour of what it looks like now and retraces how the whole event happened.

Adam played a clip from an ITV documentary that has already been pulled from YouTube and ITV. John mentioned the fascinating documentary Trekkies. In case your are wondering, I've only watch one Star Trek film and this documentary kept me quite entertained.
